Sexism Level: DJ Mag

Well DJ Mag are at it again, this time pissing off a lot of people by going full on sexist all in the name of a ‘joke’. It’s probably no joke to the female DJ’s out there, apparently written with tongue and cheek, it is sexism nonetheless. The article underlines the gender inequality with respect to female Djs. Quite a compelling piece of writing, until some idiot decided to use a photo that is causing up quite a stir (see below).

To an extent, I agree with DJ Mag, there used to be a gender inequality issue within the scene, but I honestly don’t think that exists any more. Females are taken just as seriously as men, if not more seriously, I mean let’s face it, we’re all shit scared of them. Take Maya Jane Coles, Nina Kraviz and Hannah Wants as prime examples. Furthermore, Annie Mac is one of the most prolific selectors the UK has to offer, I wouldn’t dare test her judgement.

However, the fact of the matter is that female DJs are still in the minority, and it probably stems from a time in the past when the scene was favouring male Djs. The tides are definitely changing though and we are seeing (and without sounding patronising) a very promising and talented generation of female Djs shining through.

In today’s world, sexism is rare, and this ‘lad’ culture that has seemingly taken over the UK is a façade put on by men with little minds to look ‘macho’ in front of other men, also, with little minds; like some kind of contemporary take on primitive alpha male behaviour. I really do think that behind the face of ‘lad culture’ we genuinely recognise and appreciate equality between genders.

However thanks to Dj Mag, all that progression has been kicked back 100 years… It’s fine though, because they’re ”only jokin!”
