DJ Sneak – South, Manchester

Written for Ticket Arena

With its hefty Funktion One sound system and purpose built underground chamber, South was the perfect choice for Covert Events to host their second party with non other than Puerto Rican born, self proclaimed House Gangster DJ Sneak.

Warming up the basement was resident DJ Murr, with the resonating bass thumps of Dennis Ferrer’s Mind Your Step and Darius Syrossian’s Who’s The Douche alike, the corners of the basement started to fill with eager party goers waiting in anticipation for the arrival of Sneak. Murr’s set was coming to an end and the crowd were all smiles as Sneak appeared into the DJ booth; it was finally time for the house legend to start his long awaited 3 hour set. He starts as he means to go on; the first hour was laden with soulful Chicago house, a sound pioneered for the last 20 years by the man himself. The level of intensity created by Sneak was unrivalled by any DJ that I’ve seen before, nevertheless about half way through his set, I decided to take a wander outside.

The event page promised a more ‘intimate feel’ in the courtyard, and they were not wrong. The atmosphere completely changed; from the deep, melancholic house sounds of the 90’s to a somewhat light hearted carnival-esque environment. The most memorable track of the night was resident Liam Murphy playing M People’s, Moving On Up which was met by a plethora of cheers- the DJs’ in the courtyard were putting on a party and there were plenty out to soak in the vibes.Back inside, the mood had changed; it was murkier and more tribal with Florian Meindl’s Flashmob filling the basement. Sneaks ability to read and manipulate the crowd is undeniably the reason he is still one of the most respected DJs on the planet. The high point of the night came when he dropped Chez Damier’s Can You Feel It; after an hour of pumping groovy house, it exemplified his expertise in playing the right tune at the right time.

The crowd slowly shrunk as Sneaks set was coming to an end. For a man so publicly outspoken and surrounded by controversy, he sure knows how to deliver the goods on the dance floor. From start to finish the night was a success and with it being only their second event, it’s obvious that the crew behind Covert Events know exactly what they are doing.
